Genital Warts in Koh Samui — How They Are Treated and Whether They Come Back

Clinically reviewed by Dr. Ponlawat Pitsuwan, Physician, Doctor Samui. Last reviewed: September 2026

Genital warts are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) and can be diagnosed and treated at Doctor Samui’s Chaweng clinic, often in a single visit. For short-stay tourists, in-clinic cryotherapy or trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is usually the most practical option. Treatment removes the visible warts, but the virus can stay in the skin and warts sometimes return. Follow-up matters.

You noticed something a few days into your trip. Maybe after a beach night in Chaweng, maybe while changing after a dive out of Maenam. It is small, flesh-coloured, a little raised. You are not sure what it is, and you are a long way from your usual doctor.

The good news: this is straightforward to assess. Most external genital warts can be diagnosed on visual exam alone, and treatment can often happen the same day. What you need to know is whether what you are looking at is actually a wart, what your options are given how long you have left on the island, and whether it will come back. This article answers all three.

Is This Actually a Genital Wart? What It Looks Like and What It Is Not

Genital warts are soft, skin-coloured growths caused by HPV. They can appear on or around the penis, vagina, vulva, anus, or inner thighs. Some are single bumps. Others cluster in a shape that looks a little like a cauliflower. They are usually painless.

The problem is that several things look similar. Skin tags are soft, hanging, and common in skin folds. Molluscum contagiosum causes small, round, dimpled bumps and spreads differently. Flat lesions linked to secondary syphilis can mimic warts closely enough that a doctor needs to examine them. Pearly penile papules are a normal anatomical feature that alarms many men who have never noticed them before.

None of these should be self-treated with cream bought at a pharmacy. If you are not certain, get it looked at. A short exam is all it takes to tell them apart.

How Genital Warts Are Diagnosed at a Clinic in Koh Samui

For most patients, diagnosis is visual. A doctor examines the area and can identify typical warts without any further testing. No swab, no blood test, no wait.

In some cases, a doctor may apply dilute acetic acid to the skin. Areas that turn white can reveal lesions not visible to the naked eye. This is useful for patients with recurring warts or when the virus is present in the skin without visible warts.

A biopsy is rarely needed for typical external warts. It becomes relevant when lesions look unusual, are very large, or do not respond to treatment. At the Doctor Samui clinic in Chaweng, the initial exam takes place in a private consultation room. If a clear diagnosis is made, treatment can follow in the same appointment.

Genital Warts Treatment in Koh Samui — and Which Option Makes Sense If You Are on Holiday

This is where the practical side matters most, and where most information online misses the point for travellers.

Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the wart tissue. It is quick, done in the clinic, and requires nothing from you after the session. TCA works similarly: a doctor applies it directly to the wart during the appointment. Electrocautery uses a small electric current to remove lesions and is more commonly used for larger or more stubborn warts.

Topical creams like imiquimod and podofilox are also effective, but they require careful home application for several weeks. Partial treatment is worse than no treatment, and a precise schedule matters.

If you are leaving Koh Samui in a few days, topical creams are not your best option. For short-stay tourists, cryotherapy or TCA during a clinic visit is almost always the better choice. A single session can clear small to moderate external warts, and you leave the island knowing the visible lesions are gone. Long-stay expats with more time can consider a topical course combined with a follow-up visit.

Why Genital Warts Can Come Back — The Virus vs. the Wart

Treatment removes the visible wart. It does not remove HPV from your body.

The virus can sit in surrounding skin cells without causing any visible lesion. In the weeks or months after treatment, those cells can produce new warts. This is not reinfection from a partner. It is the same virus, already there.

Recurrence is common, especially in the first three months after treatment. It does not mean the treatment failed. In most healthy adults, the immune system clears HPV within one to two years. Warts that keep coming back, or that grow rapidly, may be a sign that the immune system is under strain, and your doctor needs to know if anything is affecting your immune function.

The practical point: treat the visible warts now, watch for recurrence, and come back if new ones appear. Do not apply over-the-counter remedies not prescribed for this purpose. Some cause chemical burns in sensitive tissue.

What to Tell Your Partner — and When

If you are travelling with a partner, this affects both of you.

HPV spreads through skin-to-skin genital contact. A condom reduces risk but does not eliminate it, because HPV can live on skin not covered by a condom. Your partner may already have the virus without any visible symptoms. Many people never develop visible warts at all.

Standard guidelines recommend that partners of anyone diagnosed with a first episode of genital warts also get assessed. This does not mean your partner definitely has warts or will develop them. It means a quick check is sensible.

At Doctor Samui, both partners can be seen in the same visit, whether at the clinic in Chaweng or via a hotel call. There is no need to book separately or explain the situation twice.

Prevention and the HPV Vaccine — What You Can Still Do

If you have already been diagnosed with genital warts, the HPV vaccine is still worth having for most people.

Gardasil-9 protects against nine HPV strains. Types 6 and 11 cause the vast majority of genital warts, but there are other strains, including some linked to cervical and other cancers, that you may not yet have been exposed to. Getting vaccinated after a diagnosis with one strain still protects against the others you have not acquired.

The vaccine will not treat or clear an existing infection. It will not make current warts go away. But it offers real protection going forward. It is available in Thailand, and long-stay expats often ask about it during sexual health consultations at Doctor Samui’s Chaweng clinic.

Getting Treated at Doctor Samui — What the Appointment Actually Looks Like

You do not need to book ahead. The Chaweng clinic is walk-in. If you would rather not travel, a doctor can come to your hotel or villa anywhere across the island, day or night.

The consultation is private. You describe your symptoms, the doctor examines the area, and a diagnosis is usually made on the spot. If cryotherapy or TCA is appropriate, treatment can follow in the same session. You leave with clear instructions on what to expect over the next week or two, and what to watch for that would mean coming back.

If broader sexual health screening makes sense, which it often does when someone presents with a new STI, that can be arranged at the same visit. STI testing, HIV screening, and a full sexual health check are all available through our sexual health service. If you have concerns about recent HIV exposure, PEP needs to be started within 72 hours, so do not wait.

Follow-up can be arranged before you leave the island or planned for a return visit.

FAQ

Can I get treatment for genital warts on the same day I visit the clinic in Koh Samui?

For most external warts, yes. A diagnosis can be made on visual examination at the first visit, and cryotherapy or TCA can usually be carried out the same day. Doctor Samui offers walk-in consultations in Chaweng and 24/7 hotel visits, so you do not need an appointment or a referral. Larger or internal lesions may need a different approach, which your doctor will explain at the time.

Will genital warts come back after treatment?

They can. Treatment removes the visible warts, but HPV can remain in surrounding skin cells and produce new lesions, especially in the first three months. In most healthy adults, the immune system clears the virus within one to two years. If new warts appear, come back for assessment rather than self-treating.

What is the best treatment if I am only in Koh Samui for a few more days?

In-clinic cryotherapy or TCA is the better choice for short-stay travellers. Topical creams require weeks of careful home application and are not suited to tourists leaving soon. A single clinic session can clear smaller external warts before you fly. Doctor Samui can treat you on the same day you come in.

Can I still get the HPV vaccine if I already have genital warts?

Yes, and it is worth considering. Gardasil-9 protects against HPV strains you may not yet have been exposed to, including strains linked to cancer. It will not treat your current infection, but it offers genuine protection going forward. Doctor Samui can advise on eligibility and availability during a sexual health consultation.

My partner and I are both on holiday in Samui — do we both need to be checked?

Partner assessment is recommended when one person is diagnosed with a first episode of genital warts. Your partner may have the virus without visible symptoms, as that is common. Doctor Samui can see both of you in the same visit, at the clinic or via a hotel call, privately and without delay.

I found a bump after snorkelling near Chaweng — could it be a genital wart or something else?

A bump in the genital area has several possible causes, including skin tags, molluscum contagiosum, and normal anatomical features that people notice for the first time when anxious. A doctor can tell the difference in a short examination. Do not apply any cream or treatment until you know what you are dealing with. Walk into the Doctor Samui clinic in Chaweng or request a hotel visit and we will sort it out quickly.
