Emergency Numbers in Koh Samui: Who to Call and What to Expect

Clinically reviewed by Dr. Ponlawat Pitsuwan, Physician, Doctor Samui. Last reviewed: September 2026

The main emergency number in Koh Samui is 1669 for a medical ambulance and 191 for general police emergencies. For tourists needing English-speaking help, 1155 (Tourist Police) is often the most practical first call. For urgent but non-life-threatening situations, Doctor Samui is available 24/7 by phone and WhatsApp, with hotel and villa visits across the island.

You are two days into your Samui trip when something goes wrong. Maybe it is a scooter slide on the ring road near Chaweng. Maybe your child spikes a high fever at your Bophut villa at midnight. Maybe your snorkelling partner surfaces from a reef near Lamai looking pale and confused. In that moment, you do not want to be Googling. You want to know exactly who to call and what happens next.

This guide covers every number you need on Koh Samui, what each one actually does, and how to decide between an ambulance, a hospital, and a private clinic. Most tourists either over-react and call an ambulance for something a clinic can handle in twenty minutes, or they wait at the resort with a wound that needs stitches. This article helps you get that call right.

What Each Number Actually Does — and Who Answers

This is the part most emergency guides leave out.

When you call 1669, you reach the national EMS dispatch. Operators are mostly Thai-speaking. English support is inconsistent, especially at night and outside central Chaweng. Response times vary by location. If you cannot communicate clearly in Thai, you may lose critical minutes.

When you call 191 (police emergency), the same language barrier applies. It is not a bilingual line. In a serious accident on the ring road, calling both 191 and 1669 makes sense, but do not expect smooth English communication on either.

1155, the Tourist Police hotline, is different. Operators speak English and are available around the clock. They can act as a live interpreter between you and Thai emergency services. If you are a tourist in distress and you speak no Thai, call 1155 first. They can contact 1669 on your behalf while staying on the line with you.

Samui Rescue (077 421 444) is a local volunteer service. They often arrive faster than national EMS for on-island incidents and know Samui’s roads and beach tracks well.

Common Tourist Emergencies on Koh Samui — and the Right Call for Each

Every week at our Chaweng clinic, we see the same injuries from the same activities.

A motorbike slide on the ring road near Nathon or Mae Nam usually means road rash, gravel in the skin, and sometimes a wound that needs cleaning and stitching. This is urgent but not life-threatening. A clinic that handles wound care and minor procedures is the right call, not an ambulance.

Coral cuts from snorkelling near Angthong Marine Park or the reefs off Chaweng need proper cleaning and sometimes antibiotics. Coral carries bacteria that infect fast. Rinsing with fresh water and covering with a plaster is not enough. Come in to the clinic, or we can come to you.

Jellyfish stings range from uncomfortable to serious depending on the species. Most stings on Samui are painful but manageable. A severe reaction, difficulty breathing, or swelling spreading well beyond the sting site warrants 1669. Localised pain and redness warrants a clinic visit, not an ambulance.

Dog bites, even minor ones, need medical assessment the same day. Rabies is present in Thailand. The window for starting post-exposure treatment matters. Doctor Samui carries rabies vaccine and can start your course immediately.

What to Say When You Call — A Simple Script

Koh Samui has almost no street addresses. Most resorts, beaches, and villas are found by landmark, not road name. This is the single biggest communication problem in a tourist emergency.

When you call any emergency line, give your name first, then the nearest landmark or resort name, then the beach or area (Chaweng, Lamai, Maenam, Bophut), then what happened and how many people are involved. Keep it short. Repeat the location twice.

If language is a barrier on 1669, switch to 1155 and ask them to relay your location and situation. For Doctor Samui, drop a pin on Google Maps and send it via WhatsApp. No address needed.

Diving and Marine Emergencies — Specialist Contacts

This section matters if you dive. Samui sits at the edge of the Samui Archipelago, and divers pass through here year-round.

Decompression sickness happens when a diver ascends too fast and nitrogen bubbles form in the body. Symptoms include joint pain, skin mottling, dizziness, numbness, or weakness after a dive. If you or your buddy shows any of these signs after surfacing, call the hyperbaric chamber facility at +66 77 427 427 immediately, then call 1155 or 1669 alongside it.

Do not wait to see if symptoms settle. They will not resolve without treatment, and time matters. Doctor Samui can provide an initial assessment and support while transfer to the hyperbaric facility is arranged.

When the Ambulance Is Not the Right Answer

Call 1669 without hesitation for unconsciousness, chest pain, major trauma, stroke symptoms, or a severe allergic reaction affecting breathing. These are the right reasons to call it.

For everything else, an ambulance may not be your fastest or best option. Both major hospitals have 24/7 emergency rooms, but weekend nights bring waiting times and costs that do not match every situation.

For urgent but non-life-threatening care, Doctor Samui handles wound care and sutures, fever and infection, food poisoning, allergic reactions, ear and eye injuries, and urgent care for children. We see patients at the Chaweng clinic or visit hotels and villas across the island, including Maenam, Lamai, Bophut, Choeng Mon, and Taling Ngam, day or night.

If you are unsure which level of care fits your situation, call and describe it. If you need an ER, we will tell you plainly.

Evacuation and Air Ambulance — Worst-Case Scenarios

Some situations require leaving Koh Samui entirely. Bangkok Hospital Samui can coordinate medical evacuation to Bangkok for conditions beyond what the island can manage. Siam Air Care (+66 2 586 7654) operates private air ambulance services for critical transfers.

This is rare. But if someone in your group has a serious head injury, major internal trauma, or needs specialist surgery or intensive care, the on-island hospitals will stabilise and arrange transfer.

Run a parallel call to your travel insurer during any serious incident. Most policies require notification before significant treatment begins. Keep your policy number saved in your phone.

Before You Land — Save These Numbers Now

Do this before you board the plane. Not after.

Save 1155 as "Samui Tourist Police," 1669 as "Samui Ambulance," 077 421 444 as "Samui Rescue," and Doctor Samui’s number from doctorsamui.com as "Samui Doctor 24hr." Screenshot the table at the top of this article and keep it in your camera roll.

If you are travelling with children, write the numbers on paper and keep it in your day bag. If something happens at Na Muang waterfall or on a quiet north-coast beach, you want those numbers visible without needing signal or battery.

The families and divers and long-stay expats we help through our accidents and injuries service are almost never the ones who panicked and made the wrong call. They are the ones who had a number ready before anything went wrong.

Doctor Samui is a walk-in clinic in Chaweng with 24/7 doctor visits to hotels and villas across Koh Samui, including Bophut, Maenam, Lamai, Choeng Mon, and Taling Ngam. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the emergency number in Koh Samui?

For a medical emergency, call 1669 (ambulance) or 077 421 444 (Samui Rescue, a local volunteer service). For police, call 191. If you need English-speaking help or want someone to coordinate the call for you, dial 1155 (Tourist Police) first. They can contact other services on your behalf while staying on the line with you.

Do emergency services in Koh Samui speak English?

1669 and 191 are mostly Thai-language lines, and English support is not guaranteed, especially at night. 1155 (Tourist Police) operates in English 24 hours a day and is the most reliable first call for tourists who speak no Thai. Both major private hospitals and Doctor Samui have English-speaking staff available at all hours.

When should I call a private clinic instead of an ambulance in Koh Samui?

Call 1669 for anything life-threatening: unconsciousness, chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe allergic reaction with breathing difficulty, or major trauma. For urgent but non-life-threatening situations such as road rash from a scooter fall, a coral cut, high fever, food poisoning, or a child who is unwell, Doctor Samui can usually reach you faster and at lower cost than a full emergency room visit.

What is the diving emergency number in Koh Samui?

Call +66 77 427 427 for the hyperbaric chamber facility on Koh Samui. Use this number if someone shows signs of decompression sickness after a dive: joint pain, dizziness, skin mottling, numbness, or weakness in the limbs. Call 1155 or 1669 at the same time. Do not wait to see whether symptoms improve on their own.

How do I tell emergency services where I am in Koh Samui if there is no street address?

Say the beach name, the resort name, or the nearest landmark, and repeat it twice. If you are contacting Doctor Samui via WhatsApp, drop a Google Maps pin and send it directly. We use location pins for all hotel and villa visits, which is far faster than trying to describe a remote property or beach track.

My child got sick in the night at our Maenam villa. Should I go to the hospital or call a clinic?

For a child with fever, vomiting, rash, or a non-life-threatening injury, call Doctor Samui first. We do villa visits across Maenam, Bophut, and the north coast, and a doctor can assess your child at your accommodation without putting a sick or frightened child in a car for a late-night hospital trip. If hospital care is needed, we will tell you clearly and help you get there.
