Bitten by a Dog at Chaweng Beach? Nearest Clinic and What to Do

Clinically reviewed by Dr. Ponlawat Pitsuwan, Physician, Doctor Samui.

If a dog bites you at Chaweng Beach, wash the wound with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes, then go straight to a clinic. Do not wait to see if it gets infected. Rabies is fatal once symptoms appear, but post-exposure treatment is highly effective when started quickly. Doctor Samui is a walk-in clinic on Chaweng Beach Road with rabies vaccines and immunoglobulin available same day.

You are walking along the sand near the northern end of Chaweng Beach when a soi dog trots over, sniffs your ankle, and snaps. It happens in seconds. The dog wanders off looking completely fine, and now you are standing there wondering whether this is serious or whether you are overreacting. You are not overreacting. This is one of the most time-sensitive situations we see at our Chaweng clinic, and the next hour genuinely matters.

Thailand is rabies-endemic, meaning the virus exists in the local animal population. Stray dogs on Chaweng Beach have unknown vaccination histories. A bite, a scratch that breaks the skin, or saliva on a fresh wound puts you in WHO exposure territory. The good news is that treatment works. You just have to start it.

First 15 Minutes After a Dog Bite at Chaweng Beach

Do not go back to your hotel and Google this later. Start wound care right now, wherever you are.

Wash the wound under running water with soap for a full 15 minutes. Set a timer. This step alone significantly reduces transmission risk, according to WHO guidance. If you are on the beach, get to the nearest bathroom or tap as fast as you can.

After washing, apply an antiseptic if you have one: iodine, alcohol gel, or more soap. Do not cover it tightly yet. Then come directly to our clinic on Chaweng Beach Road. Do not wait until tomorrow morning, and do not let the bite become a reason to cut your trip short. Treatment is straightforward and we handle it every day.

Understanding Your Risk — WHO Bite Categories in Plain Language

The WHO classifies animal bite exposures into three categories, and which one applies to you determines what treatment you need.

Category I means the animal touched or licked unbroken skin. Wash the area and no further treatment is needed. Category II means a bite through clothing, a minor scratch with broken skin, or saliva on broken skin. You need the rabies vaccine series. Category III means a bite that pierced the skin, a scratch that bled, saliva contact with your eyes or mouth, or any bite on your face, head, neck, or hands. You need the vaccine series and rabies immunoglobulin, an injection given around the wound that provides immediate protection while your immune system responds.

Most beach bites we see at Doctor Samui are Category II or III. If you are unsure which applies, come in and let us look. You do not need to classify it yourself.

Why a Healthy-Looking Dog Still Requires Treatment

This is the part that surprises almost every patient after a dog bite at Chaweng Beach. The dog seemed calm. It may have wagged its tail before it bit. None of that changes the clinical picture.

A dog can carry rabies and pass the virus through its saliva several days before it shows any signs of illness. You cannot tell by looking at it. Unless the owner is standing next to you right now with an up-to-date vaccination record, WHO protocol requires you to treat the exposure as a rabies risk.

The 10-day observation rule only applies when the animal can be reliably caught, confined, and monitored by a vet. A Chaweng beach dog that has already walked away does not qualify. Get treated. If it later turns out the dog was vaccinated, no harm done.

What Treatment Looks Like at Our Chaweng Clinic

When you walk in, we clean and assess the wound first. For deeper bites we may remove any damaged tissue to reduce infection risk. We also check whether you need a tetanus booster.

Then we start the rabies post-exposure prophylaxis series. The vaccine is given on day 0, day 3, day 7, and day 14. For Category III bites, we give rabies immunoglobulin on day 0, injected into and around the wound. We stock both the vaccine and immunoglobulin at our Chaweng Beach Road clinic, so you do not need to travel to a hospital in Surat Thani or queue at the government hospital. We also prescribe antibiotic cover where it is clinically appropriate, since dog bites carry a real bacterial infection risk regardless of rabies.

The whole first visit takes roughly an hour. Most patients are back at their hotel by lunch. More detail on the full process is on our rabies vaccine page for Koh Samui.

If Your Child Was Bitten by a Dog at Chaweng Beach

Children are bitten more often than adults, partly because they approach dogs at face and hand level. A bite to the face, neck, or hands is automatically Category III regardless of how minor it looks.

Immunoglobulin dosing for children is calculated by body weight, so you need a doctor to do this. Do not estimate. Bring your child directly to our clinic and we handle the dosing, the wound cleaning, and keeping the process calm. The vaccine series is well tolerated in children. Do not delay treatment while you decide how to explain it to them.

If your child is too unwell to travel, or you are staying outside Chaweng, our 24/7 hotel and villa visit service covers the whole island, including Maenam, Bophut, Lamai, and Choeng Mon.

Leaving Koh Samui Before Your Vaccine Course Is Finished

The rabies post-exposure schedule runs over two weeks. Many visitors are not on the island that long, and that is not a problem. You just need the right documentation.

On your first visit, we give you an international vaccination certificate showing the vaccine brand, batch number, date, and dose number. Any qualified clinic in Bangkok, Phuket, or back home can continue the series from where we left off. Keep that certificate with your passport, not in your checked bag. If you are flying out before day 3, book your next dose before you leave Samui. The timing matters and gaps in the schedule should be avoided.

Travel Insurance and Keeping Your Paperwork

Most travel insurance policies cover emergency animal bite treatment. Ask us for an itemised English-language receipt, a written doctor’s report describing the exposure and treatment, and your vaccine certificate. Photograph the wound before we clean it, because some insurers request that evidence. We provide all of these documents at Doctor Samui on the day of your visit. Keep everything together in one folder, physical or digital, and submit your claim as soon as you are home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a clinic near Chaweng Beach that treats dog bites the same day?

Yes. Doctor Samui is a walk-in clinic on Chaweng Beach Road and we treat dog bites same day, including rabies post-exposure vaccination and immunoglobulin. No appointment needed. If you cannot get to us, WhatsApp us and we will send a doctor to your hotel or villa.

The dog looked healthy and friendly. Do I still need a rabies shot?

Yes. A dog can carry rabies and pass it through a bite before it shows any symptoms. Looking healthy means nothing without a verified vaccination record in hand. WHO protocol requires treatment regardless of how the animal appeared or behaved.

My child was bitten by a dog at Chaweng Beach. What do I do first?

Wash the wound with soap and running water for 15 minutes, then bring your child directly to our Chaweng clinic. Do not wait. Children’s immunoglobulin dosing is calculated by body weight and must be done by a doctor. Bites near the face or hands are treated as high priority.

Can I start the rabies vaccine on Samui and finish the course in Bangkok or back home?

Yes. We give you an international vaccination certificate on day 0 that any qualified clinic worldwide can use to continue the series. The schedule runs on day 0, 3, 7, and 14. Stick to the timing and do not skip doses.

Will my travel insurance pay for dog bite treatment in Koh Samui?

Most policies cover it under emergency medical treatment. Ask us for an itemised English-language receipt, a written doctor’s report, and your vaccine certificate. Photograph the wound before treatment if you can. We provide all documents at Doctor Samui on the day of your visit.

What is rabies immunoglobulin and do I need it?

Rabies immunoglobulin is an injection given into and around the bite wound on day 0. It provides immediate protection while your body begins responding to the vaccine. You need it for Category III exposures, which includes any bite that breaks the skin, especially on the face, hands, or neck. We stock it at our Chaweng clinic.

How do I know if my bite is serious enough to need treatment?

If a dog’s teeth broke your skin at all, even slightly, that is a WHO Category II or III exposure and you need the vaccine series. Category I, where the dog only licked unbroken skin, requires no vaccine. When in doubt, come in and let us look. Do not try to classify it yourself.
